November 14: visit to Independance

We took a ferry out to Independance (also called Mango Creek) yesterday. The boat taxi is called hokey pokey- it’s a 15 minute ride across the lagoon. All the kids will take this boat across toget to school each day.

Independance is a bit larger than Placencia village- it’s not as touristy and there are more Hispanic speakers. people also seem more honest about prices and did not try to up the prices for us. We found a family run stall that sold really good panadas (empanadas) for 1bze for 2 (equivalent to 25 cents each). We ordered 10 and 3 bottled cokes and it came to 4$ US.

Kids around town also want to talk to you- some will say ‘ni hao’, others will say ‘Ching Chong’. Surprisingly most of the grocery markets are run by Chinese people- Cantonese speaking!

It was an eye opening trip seeing more of the local side.
